When I began composing this piece, I had the idea of starting with a theme and varying it through the use of musical and technological techniques. However, it soon became clear to me that traditional methods of variation would not fit the musical direction of the piece. Because of the theme’s meditative quality, I chose to use texture rather than technique as a means of variation. Throughout the piece, sonic layers are added and taken away, creating a meditative and introspective musical narrative.
